Micro Analysis & Design, Inc. (MA&D) and the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) Human Factors Group have teamed to conduct innovative research and development aimed at demonstrating methods for diagnosing student competencies and training needs, and adapting the sequence and content of scenarios to target identified weaknesses. Cognitive task analysis methods will be used to identify the diagnostic strategies used by expert pilot instructors for relating observed performance to competencies and to training solutions. Human performance modeling and probabilistic methods will be applied to develop proof-of concept demonstrations of tools to support the pilot instructor in (1) assessing trainee performance and diagnosing deficient skills or competencies, and (2) adapting training scenarios to target identified skill or competency deficiencies. Adaptive scenario generation tools to will enhance the effectiveness and reduce costs of training for military simulation training systems. Automated performance measurement and diagnosis will be an essential component for creating deficiency-targeted simulation training scenarios for simulation-based training environments developed for government and commercial applications.
