Abstract

In this Phase II, we will develop and test a prototype of a compact, high speed circuit isolation device for medium voltage DC applications. The prototype will have a minimum power density of 30 MW/m3, an opening speed of less than 1 ms, an endurance of 5000 open/close cycles, a current of 2000 A, and a voltage of 6000VDC. The prototype will be composed of a mechanical contactor with a fast moving contact that is launched with electromagnetic forces to achieve the fast circuit isolation required for this application. A prototype will be designed, built and tested during this phase. Electrical, functional, thermal, endurance, and sock and vibration tests will be conducted in this phase. At the end of this phase the isolation device will be at Technology Readiness Level 6. The successful development of this technology will enhance future combatant ship survivability while reducing the size and weight of the whole power distribution system.
