Abstract

The objective of this proposal is to demonstrate the feasibility of a multi-wavelength laser transmitter package for WDM applications that enables multiplexing of wavelengths without the use of filters, waveguides, couplers and fiber splicing. The multi-wavelength laser transmitter combines 4 or more wavelengths in the infrared spectrum (~1310 nm) in a small form-factor uncooled package. The transmitter is capable of supporting 10-Gigabit transmission over 300 m distances using multi-mode fiber making it suitable for use in high-speed defense communication systems as well as commercial CWDM fiber optic communication systems. Passive alignment and high volume semiconductor assembly technology can be used to manufacture the package. This results in a more robust, reliable, low-cost and manufacturable transmitter. The transmitter package is enabled by the unique characteristics of Photodigm's long-wavelength surface emitting GSE laser.
