Applied Physical Sciences Corp. (APS) in collaboration with Capewell Inc. will develop an automated system for logging parachute usage and performance electronically using a miniature embedded data logger which interfaces directly with commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) radio frequency identification (RFID) readers. The proposed system is intended to replace parachute logbooks with a small, removable data logger that can measure parachute opening shock and altitude descent. The focus of this Phase I effort will be to develop an integrated platform with electronics and sensors that requires minimal servicing, and that may be easily and safely retrofitted to existing parachute systems, both personnel and cargo. Commercialization within the US Army and the civilian skydiving markets will be pursued.
