Abstract

Millennium Engineering and Integration Company (MEI) is developing a revolutionary thermal battery technology that uses molten nitrate electrolytes. This new thermal battery will deliver higher energy densities, lower operating temperatures, long shelf life, and will be smaller in size for a specified power and energy than current military thermal battery configurations. The battery capitalizes on the implementation of molten nitrate electrolytes used with new cathode materials that produce higher cell voltages and power densities as compared to current thermal batteries. The objective of the proposed effort is to develop a prototype thermal battery based upon a nitrate electrolyte. Component manufacturing processes that are more efficient, require less manpower and capital costs, more durable, and are process flexible in nature will be researched and utilized in prototype development.
