Abstract

The Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) is being developed to meet demands of the global war on terrorism and unanticipated threats. Due to its sophisticated technology and optimal manning strategy, the work of the LCS Sailor has been proposed to be different from that of sailors on ships of similar size and mission. In Phase II, we propose to develop a prototype selection tool(s) that will assist the Navy in recruiting and selecting the Hybrid Sailor who will work onboard the Lockheed Martin hull. More specifically, we propose to develop descriptions of the ship s work environment, the work conducted by each billet, and the non-technical knowledge, skills, abilities, and other attributes required (KSAOs). Based on Phase I work, we anticipate that stress management will be identified as one of several important aptitudes. Then, we will prioritize the KSAOs, and develop a recommendation for how to measure them. We will work with the Navy to determine what measurement tool(s) to build. Finally, we will then develop one or more prototype measurement tools, and conduct beta tests. In Phase III we will conduct pilot testing and expand the process to the General Dynamics hull design.
