Abstract

Luna Innovations Incorporated is developing a universal, flight hardenable, miniaturizable fiber optic sensor system for the measurement of multiple physical parameters of interest. The purpose of this system is to provide an open architecture that will universally accept fiber optic sensors measuring pressure, temperature, strain, position feedback, rotation speed, etc. The system will be optimized for weight, volume, and power consumption appropriate to a flight environment. Special emphasis will be placed on developing the system to work with a broad range of fiber optic sensor types such that various sensors can be monitored using a single system. During Phase I, a prototype system was designed and a wide range of sensor variables was tested with an existing development system. Sensor testing demonstrated robustness of algorithms and calibration data protocols which, proving versatility of the system. During Phase II, Luna will work with engine and airframe OEM partners to design a system and network that is ready for flight qualification. Packaged fiber optic sensors and system will be tested and validated at OEM facilities. Detailed trade study will be completed to identify the prospects of replacing existing engine monitoring sensors by fiber optic sensors and system.
