Abstract

Luna Innovations proposes the completion of the development of a novel Web-Interfaced Nanotechnology Environmental Safety and Health (ESH) Guidance System-WINGS that will provide Air Force personnel with access to tools for managing emerging ESH risks and for exchanging vital information throughout a community of approved peers and `trusted' resources. Comprehensive guidance modules, based in part on innovative ESH `best practices' management strategies developed and implemented by Luna Innovations and the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI), will be compiled and made accessible to AF personnel through WINGS, along with other novel features and tools designed to facilitate informed and streamlined ESH management. The Luna and UDRI management frameworks were developed by leading nanotechnology and ESH researchers for use in all-inclusive applications, and thus address a broad spectrum of issues likely to occur in virtually any facility where engineered nano-materials are handled. Many regard the Luna and UDRI models as the first programs to offer comprehensive management strategies that have had their effectiveness demonstrated in actual practice. In Phase II the team will complete the defined and prioritized specific ESH data gaps from Phase I through targeted scientific studies with an operable system at the completion of the program.
