Abstract

This proposal describes a solid-state broadband beamsteerer. Thisnon-mechanical device steers spatially-coherent broadband light to a commonlocation as would a rotating mirror (i.e. no beam broadening due to wavelengthdispersion). The device uses liquid crystal as the active steering medium. Inaddition to broad spectral band steering, it offers imaging over a wide fieldof regard, submillisecton non-sequential agility, and large-apertureimplementation.In Phase I, a demonstration of the basic concept using visible to near-IRcomponents will be conducted. Also, mid-IR implementation will be fullyinvestigated. In Phase II, a mid-IR prototype will be fabricated and tested. Phase III will integrate this technology with thermal imaging systems formilitary and idustrial applications.
