Abstract

A major problem facing site managers at petroleum contaminated sites is the incorporation of information on site investigation, risk-based evaluations, and incorporating available information is to develop a single tool which: * Provides ready access to information on site investigation, risk assessment and communication, and risk-based selection of alternative remedies; Is capable of educating the site manager on the wide array of issues inherent in the site management process; and, is easily updated in the face of evolving issues in a complex field. The proposed product would educate environmental professionals and assist in developing risk-based clean up goals by evaluating Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) composition based on its individual constituents and/or surrogate compounds. The proposed product would facilitate the decision-making process and assist in determining the most cost-effective remediation alternatives. Development of the proposed software and related materials is an opportunity to design an educational product that incorporates a standard approach to assess TPH-contaminated sites. Many environmental professionals are not adequately informed or educated regarding TPH composition, fate, toxicilogy, and remediation alternatives and costs. The proposed product would educate and assist users in reaching risk-based decisions on remediation alternatives at TPH-contaminated sites.
