Research Topics


The objective is to efficiently convert electrical to mechanical energy in a meso-scale device. The approach is to develop an innovative piezoelectric motor that includes a direct, mechanical interference drive system along with an electronic charge recovery system for very high efficiency. In Phase I we will prove the feasibility of the motor by (1) developing design analyses for the electro-mechanical drive system, (2) conducting proof-of-principle tests to qualify the design models, and (3) using the qualified design models to produce a conceptual design for a complete, prototype piezomotor. In Phase II we will build a prototype piezomotor that is sized to meet military requirements and measure the efficiency and power output of the motor in conditions that simulate both space and terrestrial operation.
