ITN Energy Systems proposes herein an innovative, new, HYBRID SUPER-ELASTOMETRIC COMPRESSION SEAL for reliable, long life sealing of shipboard horizontal surfaces. Specifically, our concept comprises; Superelastic Shape Memory Alloy core to provide sealing force, Embedded in optimized Elastomer which provides mechanical conformance and survives environments. The function of a seal is simply to prevent leakage of a fluid. Shipboard applications typically use an elastomeric seal confined between two metalic surfaces. Unfortunatly, conventional elastomer seals are prone to leakage due to: Unrecoverable strain (compression set) reduces sealing force; Wear and environmental deradation- formation of leak path INT's Super-Elastomeric Seal concept promises long-life, reliable sealing: Shape memory provides large recoverable strains -maintains high sealing force (no compression set) Elastomer optimized to survive environments and wear Design de-couples seal force requirement from elastomer sealing function.
