Abstract

Sabot technology for research ballistic ranges will be transformed from cut-and-try approaches now in general use to procedures based on quantitative engineering analysis. Specific topics addressed in the Phase I effort include: Survey of sabot concepts used to date; Suvey of simplified mechanical analyses of sabot loading and discard motion; Testing of simplified stress analyses by comparing results with finite element analytic output; and Estimating feasibility of developing finite element input/output routines for effective use solving sabot problems by range operating personnel.
