Abstract

The proposed project will develop an advanced control system (software and related hardware) and adapt this control system to a well developed and commercially available honing machine. The resultant system will be capable of producing controlled inside cylinder geometries with controlled taper and cylinder size along the length of a cylinder bore on a controlled basis. The desired geometry (diameter, taper) can be simply entered by the operator with the control system generating the desired geometry via closed-loop control. The resultant system will be capable of honing diameters from 2.5" to 6" up to 100 feet in length. Desired taper over this distance can be specified from 0.000 to 0.003 inches per foot, 0.010 over this distance.
