Abstract

Traditionally, military wheeled trailer design and development has been approached on an as needed, system-by-system basis. This has resulted in a considerably large fleet of military trailers that have very specific and narrowly defined missions. The solution is a systems engineering-based approach to a Modular Reconfigurable Trailer System (MRTS). The MRTS is a conceptual design consisting of a series of trailer modules which can be assembled into complete trailers with a minimum variety of hand tools and training. The MRTS will be based on military trailer user community feedback and advanced Modeling and Simulation (M&S) tools. The MRTS design will focus on effecting improvements to Supportability, Reliability, Maintainability, Availability, Durability, Scalability, Interoperability, Mobility, Usability, Survivability, Producibility and Affordability. The goal of the MRTS is to create a trailer system that is flexible and adaptable to the military s current and emerging transportation and delivery needs with dual use in the commercial transportation, construction, and mining industries.
