Abstract

Nova Engineering will develop and demonstrate prototype HED (Handheld Emission Detectors) in Phase II; the architecture of these HEDs will be compatible with Land Warrior, for ease of integration during Phase III. Nova s HEDs will be composed of six major subsystems: (1) a new broad-band receiver that will span 30 to 3000 MHz; this will be a new RF CCA (Circuit Card Assembly) which will include circuit elements and techniques from Nova s broad RF foundation; (2) the re-use of a Digital processing CCA that incorporates a TI OMAP DSP + ARM processor, a Xilinx Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), and 64 MByes of Memory. This re-used Digital processing CCA will be augmented with a GPS receiver and a compass chip, thus providing location and bearing information for use within the HED solution algorithms; (3) a custom enclosure and COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) ruggedized PDA (Personnel Digital Assistant) that will provide the HED user interface; (4) a COTS antenna subsystem; (5) the embedded software and firmware that will run the Digital processing CCA; and (6) the HED user application that will run on the PDA. Multiple bench-level demonstrations will culminate in an open-air field test. Commercialization planning will continue.
