Abstract

The goal of this Phase II program is to identify a suitable substitute for beryllium in this case a Silicon Carbide produced via a Chemical Vapor Conversion process - used in high performance optics (including mirrors, optical benches, and support structure). Poco Graphite Inc. proposes a Phase II project that will provide the foundation for the broad development and use of a converted Silicon Carbide techology for precision optics applications. In addition, Poco has outlined both an Option this effort and a Phase III program. The Option is focused on the development of an improved version of SiC that is denser and stronger than the material tested in Phase I and offers tremendous advantage for structural components.
