Abstract

Nova Engineering proposes a Flexible, Interoperable Spaceborne Transceiver (FIST) program for the development of a software definable radio (SDR) modem for the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle (EKV). A programmable hardware architecture is proposed that affords the benefits of SDR reconfigurability under the rigorous EKV environmental and size/weight/power constraints. Waveforms from multiple missile defense products will be identified for porting to the standardized flight modem. Phase II will result in a programmable modem capability demonstration using commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) reconfigurable logic and a production plan for integrating critical elements on a radiation-hardened system-on-a-chip (SoC).
