Abstract

Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (CARS) is an in-situ, non-perturbing, laser based combustion diagnostic capable of making single shot, point temperature measurements in harsh environments. Under Phase-I OKSI designed a CARS system, conducted modeling and performance analysis, and built the test section for boundary layer measurements in the AFRL/PRSA rocket propulsion test facility at Edwards AFB. CARS measurements were also demonstrated using this test section in an ambient pressure, elevated temperature lab environment. Under Phase-II OKSI will assemble, test, deliver, and install the proposed CARS instrument at the EAFB test facility and demonstrate boundary layer temperature measurements in the high pressure, high temperature rocket combustion chamber. The CARS system will be built for operations in a harsh environment with high vibrations, dust, dirt, and large ambient temperature extremes encountered at the PRSA test facility. Once proven at the EC-1 test facility at Edwards, this CARS prototype system will serve as a model for noninvasive diagnostics for other full scale rocket test facilities.
