Abstract

The proposed work aims to develop, characterize and demonstrate a novel and highly innovative engineering method for lightweight, microcrack-resistant, all-composite tanks used in the mixing, storage and transport of harsh chemicals. The work will focus on the development of novel toughened, microcrack-resistant matrix materials. Predictive engineering models will be developed to relate the structural response of the composite tank to the material characteristics. Material tests will be performed to characterize the micro-mechanical behavior of the toughened materials. Prototype tanks will be fabricated using the materials developed in the program, and tested to validate the design assumptions.
