Abstract

A promising technical approach is dense wavelength division multiplexing. Phase II will build a new type of an "intelligent" DWDM transceiver able to tolerate millisec-scale time-varying wavelengths. The new generation of optical DWDM receive systems will be robust and require significantly relaxed tolerances for the laser sources. The biggest impact of this new technology is thus expected to be lowered costs for high-performance and robust DWDM systems. Application areas include telecommunications and computer interconnects, especially in harsh environments such as military and aerospace applications.
