Abstract

WaveBand Corporation (WaveBand) proposes to develop a new subsystem (subarray) for photonically controlled phase array antennas. Th esubsystem represents a new type of beamsteering antenna where, instead of the conventional phaseshifters or true time-delay elements, a plasma grating induced in a semiconductor is employed.The new approach is expected to dramatically lowerthe cost of the antenna. The potentialapplication for the new antenna is in X-bandradars.In the Phase II of the project, WaveBand willdesign, develop, and demonstrate the operation ofan antenna subarray in conjunction with atransmit/receive (T/R) module.WaveBand has already secured collaboration with aprime contractor in order to advance the projecttoward product development and implementation.
