Abstract

TACAN will commercialize the Fuzzy Cognitive Map(FCM) technology that was developed in Phase I by applying this software and associated hardware to digital fiber-optic multimedia network management. An option in Phase II will alow the demonstrationof an FCM interface to a Command and ControlModule for BMDO applications. TACAN's approach isbased on FCMs which are an alternative toconventional expert systems. FCMs have bigadvantages over conventional expert systems thatfavor FCMs for battle control and especially fordigital network management. FCMs permit thesysnthesis of knowledge acquired from differentsources and also allow adaptive refinement throughsupervised or unsupervised learning. Otheradvantages include high performance sensor fusion,simplicity in software development, rapidprototyping of software, software robustness, andmuch lower development costs. TACAN's approachallows both diagnostic as well as predictiveapplications, and it allows the user to managenetworks with rapid "what-if" scenarios. Thisapproach is not bogged-down with complexalgorithms or probabilistic calculations thatcharacterize non-fuzzy approaches. Because of themuch more rapid software develepment cycle andsoftware testing, software development costs areprojected to be as much as an order of magnitudeless than that of conventional expert systemsapproaches to network management.
