Abstract

The primary goal this Phase II program is to develop cost effective, high performance long wavelength vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs). To accomplish the program objectives, OCC has assembled a team of the most qualified researchers in the country. A simple fabrication process and device structure allows for wafer scale manufacturability and testing of the devices. The long wavelength VCSELs will facilitate the development of low cost, reliable transmitters for high speed military and commercial datacom and telecommunications systems. The importance of rapid commercialization of this technology to OptiComp Corporation (OCC) is underscored by its commitment to cost sharing activities. These activities include funding of a parallel technical approaches to VCSEL development at various research and corporate institutions. This Phase II effort offers a dual-use commercialization opportunity in the 1.3um VCSEL technology. By 2002, the 1.3um VCSELs will be readily available as "off-the-shelf" components for military and commercial telecommunications systems. According to a recent marketing study sponsored by the Optoelectronic Industry Development Association (OIDA) in conjunction with the Department of Commerce, the current worldwide market opportunity for semiconductor source and detector devices represent a $4.1 billion market segment.
