Non-cryogenically cooled pyroelectric IR detectors and imaging arrays, using bullk materials, are employed in a great many military and commercial systems. the technological opportunity now exists to increase responsivity and sensitivity (- 10 fold) while lowering the production costs of such systems by converting to suspended thin film structures. In the Phase I effort and through related programs, SMI has demonstrated that MOCVD is capable of producing the request thin complex oxide film structures. Raytheon manufactures functional bulk based pyroelectric detectors and imaging arrays and has demonstrated manufactures functional bulk based pyroelectric detectors and imaging arrays and has demonstrated the potential of a competely integrated thin film imaging device (IC circuitry, pyroelectric detector, module packaging, readout electronics, and so on). In Phase II we will pool our technologies to produce functional imaging arrays and detectors with significantly improved device performance. The Phase III result of the project will be economical production of superior non-cryogenically cooled pyroelectric devices, which can be retrofitted as an upgrade into existing product lines as well as forward integrated into known and anticipated low ans high end commercial and lilitary products. SMI will achieve and commercialize the materials/process technology and certain devices and our matching fund partner, Raytheon, wil market and field IR device products.l Revolutionary improvements in cost and performance of non-cryogenically cooled IR imaging imaging arrays and detectors that can retrofit existing product lines and forward integrate-- will enhance or enable a host of night vision monitoring and transportation applications. The technology proposed herein address and seamlessly slip into well understood products of the leading supplier in an existing multi-billion market.
