Abstract

The HLA Virtual Command Post (VCP) is a generalized collaborative work environment accomplished by means of a distributed simulation with the potential to revolutionize the way people work together across a network or from remote locations. The main benefit of the HLA-VCP technology is that it provides a "you are there" interface to the collaborative work environment that can be wearable (with an HMD if appropriate), re-configurable, and compatible with many existing applications. Originally designed under a CECOM contract to produce a prototype futuristic operational command post, the improved HLA-VCP will have several commercial applications including Internet commerce, distance learning, telecommuting, and multi-party entertainment. Our Phase I experiments with the RTI have led us to believe that HLA is an excellent basis for this type of multi-party distributed simulation. Our proposal is to rewrite the VCP as an HLA federate and to enhance the properties of its objects in order to produce a more refined and useable product. We currently see the primary application of the VCP technology in various DoD C4I programs.
