Abstract

In this SBIR Phase II proposal, prototypes of two kinds of revolutionary electro-optically responsive filters will be developed. The first prototypes are fast switchable broadband "pop-out" devices with controllable spectral characteristics over a broad spectral band pass. They can be switched between an opaque and clear state over a wide bandpass with a high contrast ratio, high clear state transmittance, and fast response time. The second type prototypes are spectrally tunable notch filters whose reflection peak can be tuned by an electric field while their bandwidth and reflectivity are not affected. The development of these prototype devices is based on the successful Phase I feasibility study. The Phase II tasks are designed to optimize the prototype performance followed by the characterization and a preliminary durability test. The mass production of these devices is expected one year after the completion of the Phase II project provided that sufficient following-on fund is obtained.
