Abstract

Coming proton exchange membrane fuel cells with electrolyzers (PEMFC/EC) can offer higher efficieincies, higher power and energy densities for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), particularly for low power, long endurance missions. However, current proton exchange membrane fuel cell/electrolyzer (PEMFC/EC) systems need to improve the projected power and energy densities. PEMFC/EC systems, have previously been investigated for provinding regenerative power. In Phase(I, Giner, Inc. developed unique stack designs containing low cost molded light weight cell bipolar plates with integral flow fields having a cell spacing of 10 cells per inch. This study resulted in a fuel cell stack design producing 0.5 kW/kg and a electrolyzer stack at 1.4 kW/kg. In Phase-II full size stacks, a 5kW fuel cell and 15kW electrolyzer, will be fabricated and operationally evaluated. Advanced, Giner, Inc. fuel cell and electrolzyer configurations that could lead to higher power and energy density, longer life and enhanced reliability will be investigated.
