Abstract

In this Phase II proposal, Physical Sciences, Inc. (PSI) proposes to develop and deliver two devices to the Air Force that will support critical advanced chemical laser development programs. The Air Force has intense interest in developing efficient, high power laser sources for space-based applications. The NCl (a) pumped atomic iodine laser is a promising candidate system for this important application. We will deliver a high power Microwave Driven Plasma Jet (MIDJet) device that will be designed to couple with an Air Force chemical laser test rig. This source will produce high fluxes of F atoms that are required for the chemical laser development. In addition to providing an F source for the advanced iodine laser, the MIDJet deliverable will be capable of supporting important alternate chemical laser development for spaceborne (SBL) and airborne (ABL) applications. We will also deliver a diode laser based diagnostic system to measure critical species in the NCl/I laser system. These two deliverables will be great benefit to the Air Force chemical laser development programs. The MIDJet technology also has considerable commercial potential.
