Abstract

The OSMT Phase II proposal builds upon a successful six-month Phase I R&D effort whose focus was to establish key points of feasibility for an innovative solution to managing the many technical challenges of open systems development and evolution. The key technical results of Phase I include the identification of a visual architecture grammar, and the use of Prolog as an efficient method for evaluating structural and non-structural properties of open system designs. A proof-of-concept prototype successfully evaluated test designs against executable architectural specifications. Phase II basic activity will include a metrics development task, the synthesis of an open system model component and architecture specification library, and the development and test of an advanced OSMT prototype. In the Phase II option, system qualification testing will be performed prior to the conduct of two validation experiments. The first of these experiments will produce a formal specification of a custom open system architecture for a large Naval ship procurement; the second will involve the synthesis and evaluation of a Naval combat command and control system implemented on an open system architecture. Our experiences will be used to produce a methodology handbook for applying OSMT technology to open systems engineering problems.
