Abstract

Daryoush GEMS proposes to develop and demonstrate a low-cost, serial optical data link that provides data rates up to 8 Gb/s with application-to-application latencies of less than 10 µs. The link will consist of a high-speed CMOS encoder/decoder, HBT-based serializer and deserializer, injection-locked phase-locked loop clock recovery circuit, vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) transmitter, and PIN photodiode receiver. These components will be designed to meet the requirements of the military as well as the commercial environment. The link will support both 8B10B and S-20 encoding schemes and therefore is compatible with a large number of commercial standards including Fibre Channel, Gigabit Ethernet, Serial HIPPI, Scalable Coherent Interface, and SerialExpress. In addition, the high- speed serializer, deserializer, clock recovery circuit, and optical transceiver will support ATM/SONET transfers at the OC-192 data rate. The link will cost less than $1000 in quantity.
