Abstract

We propose to develop and field test a Multi-Channel Interferometric Demodulator (MCID) which provides measurement performance and data through rates meeting the stringent criteria for Navy Surveillance Array applications employing all-fiber interferometric sensors. The proposed MCID technique employs a unique processing approach, which reduces the measurement errors by a factor approaching 10 times that of all other known approaches. Additionally, the MCID approach is extremely efficient and is accomplished with minimum process steps, using integer calculations, which is both cost and electrical power efficient. In Phase I, we verified the measurement accuracy of the proposed approach through both laboratory and simulation testing. In Phase II, we plan to develop and field test a 256 channel MCID for use with the NAVY's AODS fiber sensor array and a 64 channel MCID with the NAVY's TOTA 48 channel fiber sensor array. We anticipate successful results, providing high performance measurements and demonstrating the versatility of the MCID approach on these two different systems. The MCID is not limited to NAVY surveillance arrays. We expect many future applications to emerge in the industrial, municipal and commercial arenas.
