Abstract

An innovative heat pump thermal management system has been designed and is being built and tested. The design uses a compressor rather than a conventional pump to transport the working fluid around the loop, providing improved system reliability and performance. This system constitutes up to 28% less mass than conventional thermal management systems, and uses 28-58% less radiator area. In addition to spacecraft thermal management, this system may have application in military air and ground vehicles, or potentially in commercial two-phase system thermal control.
