Abstract

A significant demand exists for a system that automates the creation of 3-D models from image sequences, for both military and private sector applications. Having the capability to photograph an area, and then rapidly generate the 3-D model of the area, would be of great benefit to the engineering, analysis, and simulation disciplines. During the Phase project, Vexcel Corp. determined that such an automated 3-D modeling system was feasible, in Phase II we propose to develop a commercially viable system. Although significant automation research has been performed, there is not a commercial application that integrates the results of this research into a practical, automated solution. The recent enhancements in digital imaging technology, the low cost of computing capability, and the significant research in image processing algorithms have combined to create an environment for the automated modeling procedure to become a reality. Construction of the automated modeling system will be based upon implementing a set off software tools based upon algorithms developed in the Image Understanding, Computer Vision and Photogrammetric Communities. These tools will then be integrated into the existing FotoG-FMS platform, increasing the probability for Phase III success. Each tool will be aimed at automation labor intensive portions of the existing process with multiple, complementary tools available for each step.
