Automated Dynamics Corporation (ADC) proposes to exploit its knowledge of automated, in-situ consolidation of thermoplastic carbon fiber unidirectional tape to reduce the cost associated with manufacturing conventional thermoset composite sabots. Phase I work on this program demonstrated that a high-quality thermoplastic sabot could be manufactured using these materials and manufacturing methods. Phase II of this program will be used to close in on (1) the fiber placement material throughput needed to reduce fabrication cost, (2) near-net shaped performs that will help to reduce material scrap, and (3) fabrication of sabots for 20 fully assembled cartridges that will be ballistically tested for structural performance. BENEFITS: Low cost thermoplastic composite sabot fabrication. Dramatic throughput increase for in-situ, thermoplastic AFP. Cost reduction for related fabrication of aerospace products and expanded opportunities for composites in commercial I industrial applications.
