Abstract

We propose to develop a unique knowledge discovery tool that utilizes an innovative combination of artificial intelligence (AI) and human-computer interaction (HCI) techniques. Specifically, our system will fill a number of gaps in the current state of technology so as to support the special requirements of the air campaign planning domain. Our knowledge discovery tool will integrate a set of data mining algorithms that support the types of discovery tasks a campaign planner is likely to engage in. This means providing techniques for uncovering and monitoring temporal and spatial-temporal patterns in addition to the algorithms more commonly seen in integrated data mining systems. Additionally, we will support the planning process through intelligent agents that will aid or automate situation development and plan monitoring tasks. We further propose to offer all of the above capabilities through a uniform and intelligent direct manipulation based user interface. The resulting system will provide air campaign planners with a level of support that far exceeds that which exists today. Our Phase II effort will build on the strong foundation established in Phase I and lead to the commercialization of our innovative knowledge discovery system.
