Abstract

Active Magnetic Bearings (AMB) make potentially revolutionary Auxiliary and Integrated Power Units (APU/IPU) designs possible. However, their ability to sustain and operate through transient events, while remaining both small and lightweight is restricted,.Since APU/IPU size, weight and reliability are crucial flight worthy design issues, a durable compact backup bearing system is needed. Mohawk Innovative Technology, Inc. (MiTi) proposes development of a lightweight, high-speed Zero Clearance Auxiliary Bearing (ZCAB) directly suitable for application to a Sundstrand Aerospace IPU and which will be capable of one hour continuous operation. MiTi has already demonstrated the ZCAB at speeds of 11,000 rpm, under simulated 14-g shock, under simulated AMB failure and has received a patent for this backup bearing. Under this proposed program, MiTi will 1) Conduct pin-on-disk materials test of candidate material/lubricant combinations identified under Phase I; 2) Prepare a detailed design of ZCA for Sundstrand IPU; 3) Conduct subcomponent durability test under simulated loads and surface velocities; and 4) Design and fabricate a high speed simulator of the Sundstrand IPU and conduct tests representative of the expected operating conditions. The support of Sunstrand Aerospace provided in Phase I is extended and expanded under Phase II. A commitment for Phase III support has also been identified.
