Abstract

The overall objective of the effort is to develop the design and manufacturing process (IPPD) for high accuracy, ultra-miniature (small diameter) fiber optic gyroscope coils with superior performance in a critical application environment. Phase I efforts have produced two promising integrated designs and processes. These designs will be further investigated and issues such as fiber, materials, and adhesive selection; coil mount and coil form design; and winding configuration will be optimized for anticipated thermal and dynamic environments. Design requirements for military and commercial IFOGs will be taken into account. The primary advantage of the coils developed under this program is the minimization of non-reciprocal phase errors encountered in typical applications due to transient thermal environments. This minimization results in improved accuracy of the coil's performance capabilities. Characterization of these thermal effects will be performed numerically using finite design optimization. The coils developed will be compared to commercially available coils through experimental testing on-site at a commercial manufacturer.
