Abstract

The purpose of this proposal is to outline the technical approach that we plan to take in the fabrication of a Phase II prototype Precision Orbital Microaccelerometer (POMA) for the measurement of satellite crosswinds and drag. Towards this end, we have negotiated a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Electronics Systems Corp. of GEC-Marconi Hazeltine, Wayne NJ, through which GEC-Marconi has committed in-kind engineering support for the analysis of the thermal and the mechanical systems associated with a packaged and functioning POMA. GEC-Marconi will also be responsible for the laboratory testing of the device. In addition, we plan to team with Lucent Technologies/Bell Laboratories on the design and fabrication of the integrated optics chip (IOC), on which the operation of the POMA is based, according to a list of design and performance specifications we have developed in Phase I. As part of the GEC-Marconi/Rice MOU, we have outlined an agreement whereby GEC-Marconi will license Rice Systems integrated optics sensor patents, towards the future commercialization of the POMA as well as other Rice Systems integrated optics devices.
