Abstract

Motivated by the Air Force's strong need for transmitting high-speed,multiple-channel data signals over a Rotation Platform, Physical Optics Corporation (POC) proposed and investigated a unique, generic, optical rotating-to-fixed information transmission (ORFIT) technology. The core elements of the ORFIT technology include: (1) An innovative on-axis optical slip ring, which provides a lightweight, ruggedized, and gapless data transmission operation; (2) POC's proprietary optical fiber wavelenght division multiplexing (WDM) component technology (incorporated with electronic time division multiplexing (TDM) techology), which provides multichannel and multiple Gb/sec information transmission; and (3) POC's commerical off-the-shelf (COTS) multimedia data link systems, which offer a ready solution for the Air Force's data transmission and system control applications. The ORFIT technology is expected to provide the following unique features: 1. Compact volume sized and light weight; 2. High-speed data transmission; 3. Multi-channel bidirectional operation; 4. Constant and ruggedized optical interconnection; 5. Low-cost and high commerical potential. In the Phase II investigation, POC will focus on (1) developing an Air Force required prototype particulary for tracking system application; (2) develop a generic ORFIT module for a broad range of military and commercial applications.
