Abstract

In the minimally invasive OR of the near future, coordinate-accurate multi-modal volumetric image fusion will be accessible from multiple sources, including endoscopic image acquisition directly from the operative target site. Accurately-referenced hybridization of such video input with pre-existing, coordinate-defined volumetric imaging databases will require 3-D display projection. Dimensional Media Associates (DMA) proposes to develop a pre-commercial prototype system that uses multiplanar optical elements (MOE's) and holographic optical elements (HOE's) to create a solid state, stereospatially accurate, walk-around 3-D image that is suspended in free space and measurable on the X,Y, and Z axis. This display technology would revolutionize the ability of the observer to interact with and visualize 3-D data as it could be seen with wide fields of view (up to 360 degrees horizontal and 90 degrees vertical in a table top display), and in high ambient light conditions without any encumbering gear for the viewer. Benefits: Volumetric display is an obvious choice for 3-D visualization. DMA has developed a system capable of projecting images into free space and has commercially released their technology for use in retail and consumer environments. DMA plans to develop a new system that uses multiplanar optical elements and holographic optical elements to create a solid state volumetric display.
