Abstract

This project describes a way to "understand" a complex electronic warfare (EW) signal environment. It combines an acousto-optic spectrum analyzer with a neural network data analysis technique that can be used to analyze qualitaatively large volumes of signal data. The acousto-optic spectrum analyzer allows the neural network significantly greater power and precision in the analysis since it provides rapid parallel spectral analysis of individual pulses. This proposal is based upon the results of a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Phase I contract entitled "Advanced Signal Waveform Classifier", Contract No. N60921-93-C-0027, sponsored by the Naval Surface Warfare Center. the prinicpal objective of the Phase II project is the construction, characterization, and delivery of a prototype Advanced Signal Waveform Classifier (ASWC). This system will contain an acousto-optic channelized receiver interfaced to a neural network implemented with a general purpose computer workstation with additional digital signal processing boards specifically designed to calculate neural network algorithms. The optical portion of the unit will be made transportable so that a demonstration of the system could be easily accomplished on board a ship.
