Abstract

This Phase I SBIR program will prepare an integrally fabricated aluminum syntactic foam armor panel 36" X 36" square. The low cost, lightweight energy adsorbin amor concept is based on the use of a metal-encapsualted ceramic tile strike plate integrally fabricated with an aluminum foam energy adsorbing layer. A thin composite spall liner will finish the deisng. Use of 10,000 psig syntactic aluminum foam sturctual energy adsorbers enables dispersion of ballistic energy, greatly reducing spall liner requirements and thereby reducing cost and weight.
