Abstract

Border Patrol Agents (BPAs) face multiple challenges when pursuing adversaries in difficult terrains. Intelligent Automation Inc. (IAI) proposes to develop a novel target tracking and recognition system using a small UAV. Named "Dismounted Adversary Recognition and Tracking System" (DARTS), the UAV will have an advanced sensing, video processing, and autonomous flight control capabilities to follow designated targets allowing the agent to focus on mission priorities. When a BPA decides to pursue adversaries, the agent will launch the UAV, specify the intended target and hand off control to DARTS. Following the handoff, DARTS will be able to control the UAV's flight autonomously as it continues to track the target using image-based cues, reacquire the target as needed (e.g., when the target goes into hiding), and recognize the target's actions. DARTS will display the acquired imagery and event tagging information on the BPA's Control Unit. DARTS will leverage our demonstrated computer vision and autonomous navigation capabilities to deliver an effective, low-cost system that will satisfy and exceed all requirements presented in the solicitation. Built with a modular architecture, DARTS will be adaptable to use on several UAV platforms. Commercial applications include law enforcement, perimeter security, public safety, fire and EMS agencies and private industries.
