Abstract

Toyon Research Corporation proposes to develop a mobile cloud-computing (MCC) software application that will enable significant performance benefits for constrained forward-deployed mobile platforms. The proposed program will demonstrate, within the first year, the basic framework of the MCC architecture using small, lightweight, low-power, commercially available components. The MCC platform will be able to dynamically add and remove compute nodes, memory, and storage. A second demonstration will include two MCC-based applications designed for military missions. Finally, during the third year of the program, the MCC platform, together with the two applications, will be deployed on multiple, heterogeneous platforms of varying capabilities, including ground-based and airborne assets, as well as dismounted users. The deployed system will be demonstrated during a real-time field experiment conducted under realistic conditions. The fully developed system will allow bandwidth-, storage-, and processor-constrained platforms to make use of distributed shared resources to accomplish tasks previously possible only with commercial and fixed cloud-computing resources. The software will be designed to be portable to any platform, regardless of whether it is based on iOS or Android, or some other OS. The system will be robust with respect to node dropouts and will support authentication and communication security protocols.
