Abstract

Appropriate, timely, and effective antibiotic therapy is extremely challenging and vital to the management of infection in both military and civilian healthcare settings. Due to the widespread emergence of drug-resistant bacteria, effective antibiotic treatment has become even more challenging. Availability of an antibiotic decision support system (DSS) would represent an invaluable asset for healthcare providers, facilitate timely and efficient antibiotic therapies, and lead to improvements in patient safety and outcomes. In response to this need, Aptima Inc. and our partners at The Ohio State Universitys Wexner Medical Center, and Analytic Diabetic Systems, Inc. will develop an Intelligent and Directed Antibiotic Decision Support System (IDADSS). IDADSS will provide a comprehensive, customizable software application for decision support equipped with configurable antibiograms, system alerts, and visualizations of key patient-specific data routinely acquired from within and outside an electronic medical records system in real-time. IDADSS is designed with a unique suite of data-driven predictive models, algorithms, and analytics that will support healthcare providers in the implementation of timely and effective antibiotic therapy. This comprehensive functionality will serve to augment healthcare providers situational awareness, decision-making, and their ability to deliver the most safe and effective care possible using one integrated software platform.
