Abstract

PSI will demonstrate the ability to construct a safe, conformal modular battery capable of delivering >220Wh/kg and thousands of cycles. The flexibility, energy density, and most critically, safety will be achieved by modifying the cell construction so as to allow flexibility within the cell itself and between the cells in the battery module. PSI will increase the achievable battery level energy density by incorporating PSIs novel anode current collector and high active cathode electrode into the cells used in the battery. These technologies will enable the production of cells with 20% greater energy density than COTS cells. PSIs nonflammable electrolyte will be used in the cells to reduce the risk of flame or fire. Testing in Phase I will demonstrate the performance and flexibility of the modular PSI battery. Phase II will focus on constructing larger battery modules and demonstrating the performance when the cell is orientated to fit in the available space of a targeted first adopter application.
