Abstract

Several future weapons, including Railgun, and other directed energy systems rely on pulsed electrical power to deliver energy to the target. Pulsed power increases the performance, accuracy, and repeatability of Electrothermal Ignition (ETI) projectiles by delivering precisely-timed, powerful ignition pulses to high-energy, propellants. Electrothermal Ignition has been demonstrated with ETI Pulsed Power Systems (ETIPPS), however, challenges exist in delivering the pulses to the recoiling components of the gun. These systems must have rugged designs to survive the shock and vibration environments required for mobile deployment. Diversified Technologies, Inc. (DTI) proposes to develop a compact, high energy-density ETIPPS capable of operation while rigidly mounted to the recoiling gun components. This system will build on the 6.5 kV, 300 kW, 2.5 MW/m3 power converter developed for the Navy Railgun as well as energy storage, switching, and pulse forming designs derived from DTIs modulators. This design will provide elimination of the flexible link between the power source and gun barrel, and will transfer mass from the platform to the gun barrel, thereby reducing recoil. Under this effort, Diversified Technologies, Inc. will develop a compact, high-shock 6.5 kV, Power Converter and Power Delivery System capable of being rigidly mounted to the recoiling gun components.
