Abstract

We present a concept for improving standoff ground penetrating radar capabilities for detecting buried explosive hazards (BEH). Currently, standoff detection capabilities are limited to forward looking systems, which provide limited penetration of the ground surface due to the low grazing angle required for forward looking standoff detection. Additionally, forward looking arrays are somewhat limited in spatial diversity due to the constraints imposed by placing antenna elements on a single platform. Our approach incorporates a design that spreads the antenna array across multiple platforms to provide a new multi-static ground penetrating radar capability that increases angular diversity and optimizes incidence angle for subsurface detection and 3D characterization of buried targets.
