Abstract

Aerial refueling can be a dangerous mission, particularly when there is a failure in the tanker system or poor pilot technique on the receiver side. During these instances, sine waves can be developed in the hose that create loads that are damaging to both tanker and receiver aerial refueling systems. The primary objective of this Phase II.5 effort is to finish development and provide the necessary data required to support qualification and airworthiness of the new hose design. This effort, if successful, will provide a truly fail safe aerial refueling system by incorporating energy absorbing materials into the hose.
